Thanks for the entire workshop, it was everything I had hoped for.  Your combination of humor, patience, and friendship made for a great day. I thought everybody else who was there also helped make it a great day because of their interest and openness.  All in all, it was a great learning environment, and I already recommended it to someone who lives in your area.

(I) did the triathlon on Sunday (just the sprint distance).  During the run portion, rather then push, I decided to just go slow and try to focus on a couple things I learned in your workshop.  Even though I purposely went slow, my run time was pretty close to my personal best and more important than that, at the end, I felt like I could have gone much further. The relaxation of the ankles and not pushing off with the toes and using gravity seems to save a tremendous amount of energy.

I told my husband and family the techniques/instructions that you really hammered home to me, these were like GIGANTIC light bulbs going off!  I am going to focus on:

  • TOTALLY starting over again!  I have to accept the fact that I am now a new runner, just beginning my training!  Last night after running for a mile and feeling great, I stopped and made myself walk for a while, then started running again, alternating this process for 56 minutes!  Today I feel great and my hip did not hurt me at all!, my knees, feet and back didn't hurt either!  I felt so great, I think I actually skipped when I walked!

  • Posture and feet alignment checks constantly all day long!

  • If I feel a twinge, shake it out, get my chi flowing, realign my posture and don't let it become a discomfort!  If discomfort becomes pain-STOP before it becomes an injury!   BRILLIANT!

I had been on and off of injury for about 3 years when I came across Chi Running in the search engine for shin splints. I had suffered bilateral tibial stress fractures in the fall of 2005 while training for the Chicago Marathon. The next 3 years were disappointment after disappointment. I would be injured, heal, re-injure.  In 3 years there was never a time that I was pain free. I made the decision to live with the pain and for the most part I tolerated it but injury was always lurking around the corner. I had tried 3 different ortho docs, 3 chiropractors, 4 PTs and a partridge in a pear tree who all gave me the same answer you are “ just not a distance runner…give it up.”

Funny thing is that they all said, "Your alignment looks good, your gait is neutral, and you’re built like a runner." I loved running. So after all of the money spent in orthotics, therapy devices, heating pads, ice massages, and splints I came upon Chi Running. At this point my enthusiasm for a cure was at an all time low, but what was one more attempt going to hurt?

That’s when I talked to Brenda Gibson.  We talked, and talked, and talked more…..seriously! I read the book, I got the DVD and I spent evenings on the phone with her trying to run through my kitchen correctly. My husband thought I was insane!  While the phone calls were helpful, it wasn’t enough.

So the weekend I was supposed to be running the Disney Marathon (but of course was sidelined yet again) I was off to Dayton, Ohio to meet Brenda at a Chi Running workshop. This was no short trip, it was a 6+ hour drive for us.  Best 6 hour drive I have ever made!

So fast forward to today.  In December, just 11 months after attending the workshop, I ran the Memphis St Jude marathon and qualified for the Boston Marathon with a 3:39:42 PR.  Then just 4 months after in April 2009, I ran the Boston Marathon and PR’d again with a 3:39:08.  I ran 2 days later with no pain. I am running 60 miles a week and feel very little soreness. I used to wake up stiff and sore while running 35 miles a week. Next on the agenda is an ultra in Chicago this fall.

I guess I’m “just not a distance runner!”  I’m sure glad I didn’t give up!  Thanks Brenda and thanks Chi Running!

Thank you for a wonderful morning. I have been reading the chi running book and listening to the tape for the last two years and never 'got it' really before.  You brought the whole thing to life and made it 'real'! I was getting very frustrated with my running and was slower and more frustrated by the week.  I ran the last two days and was able to take 3 minutes off each mile without even trying.  I can't wait until I am able to concentrate on all the focuses. By the way, Saturday evening I went to the mall with my wife and son and they both looked at me and asked why I was so tall and where did this great posture come from!!   Thanks again,  you are GREAT!

I just want you to know how much your class helped me take the information from the book, to the street. Your class, by a multiple of 100, closed the understanding gap. Thank You!

I have always been a casual runner and have run in several 5k and 10k events over the years.  I have also experienced intermittent back pain that has resulted from running. In the Spring of 2006, I thought I would give the October Columbus half marathon a try since both my daughters were running full marathons. When I began running longer distances, my lower back pain came back and by June I had to quit running altogether.  In July, my daughter introduced me to Brenda Gibson, who was offering a course in ChiRunning. The bottom line was that by August I was able to again begin training and successfully completed the Columbus half marathon in October. Most importantly, since I took the ChiRunning course from Brenda, I have not experienced any further back pain or injuries of any kind including during and after the half marathon. Thanks Brenda for bringing this program to the Dayton area.

I have been running 2-3 times a week since the workshop back in September and I find I am enjoying it much more than I used to.  I actually look forward to it now.  I have increased my long run from 2.5 miles to 6 miles, and I have increased my fast runs (2.3 miles) from a 9:40 mile to an 8:20 mile.

Thanks so much for yesterday. I learned so much more than I expected. The book had definitely convinced me that I needed to learn it. But, I need "hands-on" -- it was just too hard for me to teach myself from the book. Your class was great!

ChiRunning will revolutionize the way you run.  To me it makes sense and makes running pleasurable, and possible for everyone.  I have been interested and involved in physical fitness for more than 45 years.  I can say without reservation that ChiRunning has changed the way I view running.

I thought my running days were over until I met Brenda Gibson, Certified ChiRunning Instructor. Brenda got me moving naturally and helped me develop a more stress-free and graceful way of running and living.  Brenda has the unique talent to inspire her students to listen to their body, and seek gradual progress.

Brenda, I am forever in your debt for introducing me to ChiRunning and a new way of focusing and relaxing in all I do in life.

Thank you so much for sharing ChiRunning with the Dayton area. I can’t express enough what a delight this learning process has been. The premise of ChiRunning just makes so much sense – keep your body aligned and let gravity pull you forward – and not only that, but it actually works.

I am currently training for the Chicago marathon and decided to try ChiRunning, thinking it couldn’t hurt, but not really expecting to see and feel immediate results. Wow, was I wrong. Two weeks ago, before I began ChiRunning, I went on a 9-mile training run and felt like I was going to keel over after 7 miles. I pressed on and completed the run with much resistance from my body, mind and spirit; however, last week, after just one ChiRunning lesson, I went for a 10-mile training run and came home raving about how different I felt…how much more enjoyable my run was…how I felt like I could have done it all over again. It’s amazing what a little pelvis leveling, posture aligning, knee bending, etc. will do. I can’t wait to keep practicing.
